Hello ArtBaer enthusiasts and participants,

things are moving forward (quoted from Fehlfarben)! Spring makes everything fresh, and so the entries on our website https://artbaer.de have been largely updated (and there is certainly more to come).

We now have a well-coordinated Discord server "Art Baer 2024" (https://discord.gg/dcVJPYGqCC) for our communication within the organization, between the participants and also with external parties, which Loki/Juno has set up in a finely tuned manner and which she also moderates. There are channels for the various teams, for finding camps, and whatever else is important. Your respective roles give you certain accesses, sometimes automatically, sometimes after activation, and you can also show your interest in working in certain areas, such as communications, art, build, sound and more!  We already have (co-)leads for a number of teams, but there are still plenty of opportunities to play an active role!

To make a real difference, it helps to take out an event membership for the Art Baer. You can do this here: https://goto2024.artbaer.de . Children are free up to the age of 18, but should be entered when the accompanying adults register. There is a contingent of event memberships at half price for fellow burgers who are financially more limited. You can apply for this here: https://www.vereinonline.org/Berlin_Burner_eV/?umfrage=781 (will be treated confidentially). At our burns, everyone has/needs event memberships, including club board members, artists and DJs (if there are any), we make no distinction. But the low-income contingent is also available to everyone.

There was a request for a next organization meeting, which we will discuss on Discord in the #public-chat (not yet in the #membership-chat, because not everyone has event memberships yet).

We will probably also organize several ABCs (ArtBaer-Cafes) in Berlin for interested people, those thinking about art, those setting up the camp, etc. News to follow.

Wir stellen was aus! / We exhibit something!

Hi Embassy-Enthusiast:in!

Hi Embassy enthusiast!

The Burner Embassy is not just there only for fun, but also to actively promote art and culture. We now want to achieve this additionall with individual event evenings and exhibitions at the Haus der Statistik.

We are still discussing the when and what of the evening events, but we have now blocked a period for our first exhibition, from May 3, 2024 (vernissage) to May 12 (finissage). We want to put on a group exhibition with works by artists who have already exhibited individually at Regional Burns or Burning Man or played a significant role in a cooperative art project there.

The rented space will be rather small and elongated (28 m2), but is directly on Otto-Braun-Straße with doors and windows facing the street (https://hausderstatistik.org/raeume-mieten/#otto-workshop1). Smaller pictures and sculptures would therefore be an advantage. Also, interactive art more closely matches the specifics of the Burning Man art concept, but this is not a must. The space is dry and warm, and we will take care of both security and hopefully insurance.

So far the plan is to open the exhibition every day from 14-18 in addition to the vernissage, Crafternoon on the first Saturday and the finissage. More events that tie in with this are of course also conceivable, e.g. talks with the exhibiting artists. Above all, however, we need helpers for the preparation, the construction and also for the whole weekdays.

If this appeals to you, as an artist or as a helper, please contact Owl (owl@berlinburner.de), I will coordinate these activities.

At least two more exhibitions are planned after this first one, then probably more as solo exhibitions.

P.S.: The Burner Embassy Berlin will also host additional ArtBaer-Cafés for Art-Baer-nterested people, those thinking about art there, those setting up a camp there, etc.

Burner Embassy Berlin: Aktuelle Pläne Frühling 2024 und regelmäßige Veranstaltungen / Current plans spring 2024 and regular events

--

The Burner Embassy Berlin celebrated its fourth birthday on December 1, 2023 and is slowly starting into spring. We are still on site every Wednesday 8-10 pm (sometimes even longer), with your snacks and drinks, on the fourth Wednesday of the month also as Berlin Burner Pasta Potluck. In addition, on the first Saturday of the month there is always the Crafternoon from 2-6 pm for joint fabric and other creations, and on the third Saturday the Burning Man Film Café with documentaries about Burns and our participatory culture.

Please keep in mind that the Burner Embassy Berlin is also a DIY and co-creation space for the Burner community and beyond. It is relatively easy to organize your own small events in the free times, just contact Owl (owl@berlinburner.de).

At the moment, it looks like the Burner Embassy Berlin will end next year with the end of the construction phase at the Haus der Statistik if we don't find an alternative location. However, in order to make good use of the time until then, not only for us but also for the city and its cultural scene, we are currently discussing two alternating series of events:

  • One Friday evening every other month use of the large room at the Haus der Statistik for an evening event, be it films by Burners, theater, Burner Bingo, etc.
  • Every other second month Friday evening (vernissage) until the following week Saturday evening (finissage) a small exhibition of art by Burners in the rooms facing the street.

We are still looking to see what fits into which month. Personally, we would prefer the 3rd Friday of each month. If this also appeals to you, please get in touch with Helga (helga@berlinburner.de).

P.S.: If you would like to receive event notifications in your own calendar and don't like Facebook, we have also set up a Meetup group for the Embassy: https://www.meetup.com/de-DE/burner-embassy-berlin/. (The other social media platforms will continue to exist)

--

The two kickoffs took place with a number of interested parties. Here is a summary of the kickoff presentations for review:  https://www.vereinonline.org/Berlin_Burner_eV/?action=data_raum&id=5641&folder=Communications%2Fpublic&download=Art+Baer+2024+Kickoff+2.pdf

As a reminder: Date is June 20-23, 2024 (plus 2 days build before and 1 day strike after) with full moon and summer solstice (and parallel to Kiez Burn), location is near Auerstedt, Thuringia. Standard costs are 80€, low-income 40€, children up to 18 free. Art grants and workshop grants, sauna, several camps in planning. Some lead roles are still available.

What's next? The communications team is working on preparing the platform for our communication. There are already over 80 people on our Discord server from previous years, which provides a good basis for exchange among participants and within the organization. However, since planning and reliability are more stable with commitment, we will probably make it possible to purchase event memberships from next weekend when the server is ready. We will contact you shortly before then.

If you are spontaneous, want to help and want to get to know the area: this Saturday (Mar 16th 2024) the "willow binding" will take place there during the day, a light work assignment to prepare many things for us and the summer. Jörg (joerg@berlinburner.de) and others of us will be there, please let Jörg know in advance that you are coming.

Welcome Home!

"The Burner Embassy Berlin - Center for Art and Participatory Culture - is celebrating its 4th anniversary as one of the original pioneer uses at the House of Statistics. During this time, we have offered over 200 public events (and even more internal ones) and have persevered as a purely donation-funded space in the face of the pandemic.

The Burner culture is characterized by experiencing and participating. Whether it's artworks, other constructions, or the events themselves: someone has to do it, but in most contexts here, there are no paid forces. People donate their free time, their skills (sometimes even their money), or learn something new along the way: working with wood, organizing various aspects of events, supporting volunteers in their work, and whatever else comes up. Lifelong learning from each other, for a cause, or simply for oneself.

The concept of art in Burner culture is defined by (interactive) sculptures where touching is not forbidden. This way, art can be experienced, and sometimes it is explicitly temporary. At larger events, such artworks are often burned like a bonfire to make room for something new and to counteract the museification of things, of art (keyword 'immediacy').

From this collective effort (as it sometimes also occurs here at the House of Statistics), trust and contact are established, and there are also ongoing joint projects and collaborations that often keep active people busy throughout the year. In our community, there are actually no spectators, only participants, even if some (and outsiders' perspectives) do not recognize this difference.

It's the same at our birthday. There's already a small program, but you are welcome to participate with spontaneous or planned ideas, as space allows. So far, we have a short film screening, Burner Bingo, a photo gallery, a Christmas photo booth, and more on the agenda (plus mulled wine). We look forward to seeing you!

Zurück aus der Sommerpause

Hallo liebe Mitburnerinnen und -burner,

(English below) hier ein kleiner Update von dem was war und dem was wird (in chronologischer Reihenfolge):

Regelmäßige Termine in der Burner Embassy Berlin: Jeden Mittwoch (4. Mittwoch als Pasta Potluck) 20-22 Uhr, 1. Samstag Crafternoon 15-18 Uhr, 3. Samstag Filmcafé 15-18 Uhr

Alle Orga-Chats sind in unserem Berlin Burner e.V.-Slack: https://join.slack.com/t/berlinburner/shared_invite/zt-1sf9k7m2q-vEJzIIFlnXcb2QzQSu_pKw

Art Baer 2023

(Slack-Channel #burn-more-2023)

Burn More 10.-12.11.2023

(Slack-Channel #art-baer-2024)

Hello Beloved Burner Community,

Here's a quick update on what has transpired and what’s on the horizon (in chronological order):

Regular Meetups at the Burner Embassy Berlin: Every Wednesday (4th Wednesday is Pasta Potluck) from 8-10 PM, 1st Saturday Crafternoon from 3-6 PM, and 3rd Saturday Film Café from 3-6 PM.

All organizational discussions are on our Berlin Burner e.V. Slackhttps://join.slack.com/t/berlinburner/shared_invite/zt-1sf9k7m2q-vEJzIIFlnXcb2QzQSu_pKw

Art Baer 2023

Thank you for your valuable feedback through the participant and organizer surveys. We will include your input in the upcoming Afterburn Report and incorporate it into our collaborative plans for next year (see below).

Almost all expenses for this year are accounted for, so we’ll soon finalize that portion of the Afterburn Report as well.

Bob and Sybille (and also Helga and Owl for some time) also attended the actual Auerworld Festival, where they noted the key differences between a "festival" and a "burn." Despite having only 60 attendees, our mini forest was almost as bustling as Auerworld's with its 2500 attendees. Plus, our ratio of art installations per participant was significantly better compared to most other Burns in the area. We also scoped out how Auerworld set up their electronic dance floor—perhaps something to consider for next time? (Slack Channel #burn-more-2023)

Burn More 10.-12.11.2023

Burn More is our conference for Burn organizers in Germany and neighboring countries, and adjacent topics (like art). After last year’s successful inaugural event, the Dresden community has volunteered to host this year’s gathering in November 10th-12th 2023. If you have any must-discuss topics or want to contribute to the agenda, please reach out. The planning team is coordinating on the Berlin Burner e.V Slack. We’re aiming for a similar price and organizational structure as last year (20€, low-income-option, rideshare and couchsurfing lists, overall 50 participants), including a directed sale for Burn organizers followed by a general sale. The agenda will likely be open to all. (Slack Channel #burn-more-2023)

Burner Embassy 4th Birthday 1.12.2023

It's hard to believe, but the Burner Embassy Berlin is turning four! Although our permanent location at the House of Statistics didn't work out and we'll have to find a new home soon, our beacon to the Burner community will always be there for you. All you need is an idea and a reservation (as long as it aligns with Burner culture and art).

On Friday, December 1st, we have reserved space not just at the Embassy, but also the "Forest" and the "Cannery"—a large heated room for festivities. We'll definitely have indoor and outdoor art and Burning Man films, and of course, let's not forget to celebrate! However, we still need volunteers to help organize, and the earlier, the better. After all, like in any Burn, the magic happens when you pitch in.

As our stay at the House of Statistics is not permanent, we’ll need a new location by 2025 at the latest. If you're interested in location scouting and setting up a new Burner Embassy, now’s the time to get involved! Maybe we can finally catch up on the vision workshop that was delayed due to the pandemic and set the course for our community for the years to come. (Slack Channel #burner-embassy-geburtstag-2023)

Art Baer 20.-23.6. 2024

As already mentioned, Art Baer 2023 was quite impressive for its size as the only official Burn in Germany. Preparations for 2024 are already underway. We're looking at June 20-23, 2024 (plus at least two build days). We'll try to resolve any scheduling conflicts, but hey, summers are tight! We're not aiming for Auerworld's 2500 attendees, but you're welcome to form even more camps. In addition to the bar, we’re considering having a dance floor as well. The first organizational activities will start in the coming months, and you're welcome to join anytime. (Slack Channel #art-baer-2024)

More updates to come soon!

Tickets: https://tickets2023.artbaer.de/, Low Income-Antrag: https://www.vereinonline.org/Berlin_Burner_eV/?umfrage=745

3. Berlin MOOP FUN / Burner Without Border Microgrant

Hi Burners and friends!

Here is a small update on the current projects of the Berlin Burner e.V.:

1. club chat

There was a request for more collaboration and communication among club members, so we expanded our Slack Pro account to include a series of club channels under the heading "Berlin Burner e.V.":

#allgemein
#ehrenamtliche
#events
#feedback
#finanzen
#marketing
#mitglieder
#presse
#projekte
#technik

With it we come perhaps something what further, and into our structure grows actually something like life (I wanted to write already loves, but that is surely somewhat premature laughing). If it has slipped through you, here again the link: https://join.slack.com/t/berlinburner/shared_invite/zt-1sf9k7m2q-vEJzIIFlnXcb2QzQSu_pKw

One result of the last general meeting was also the election of a new board. We thank Dörte as former treasurer and Michael as former board member for your work (which they will continue in other roles in the future, with Art Baer, as cash auditor or other projects)! Other changes were that Owl moved from board chair to regular board member, while Helga took the "hot seat at the top". Jörg continues as an active board member, while Simone from Hamburg has taken over the role of treasurer! Welcome, Simone, and a big thank you for taking on this task! Also a thank you to the previous cash auditors Jo and Sebastian, and also already many thanks to the new cash auditors Alexa and Michael!

2. Art Baer 2023

ArtBær tickets are now online - if you fancy joining us for the first Burn of the summer on the first weekend of June.

In summary: Thu-Sun (1.6.-4.6.), 50-100 people, 80€ (Low Income 40€), Kids under 18 free, Weidenpalast Auerstedt near Bad Sulza (45min walk from Bad Sulza train station, Mon-Fri also bus from Apolda directly to Auerstedt).

Tickets: https://tickets2023.artbaer.de/, Low Income application: https://www.vereinonline.org/Berlin_Burner_eV/?umfrage=745

But we can still use support in the orga: https://join.slack.com/t/berlinburner/shared_invite/zt-1sf9k7m2q-vEJzIIFlnXcb2QzQSu_pKw, Channel #artbaer23-main-orga

We want to make a Zoomcall this Thursday, but Jörg can only late and I also have an (online) event in the evening, so we will start 9 pm. This will be more of a catch-up, and some of us will be at the site in Auerstedt on Saturday from about 10am and help the community there with the "willow tying" and check out the site again. You are all invited to join us! If not by car, the nearest train station is Bad Sulza (2:30h from Berlin Hbf). If we are at a similar in the area, a faster transport can be organized instead of the 45 min walk through fields (please report in advance in the Slack). Pictures attached!

3. Berlin MOOP FUN / Burners Without Borders Microgrant

From the Burners Without Borders potluck, the idea to beautify the city has also matured in the meantime. It's about three MOOP Runs (aka MOOP FUN) in the summer in busy and therefore often dirty parks in Berlin, with Art Car, music, costumes and "Leave No Trace" education, with about 30 volunteers. Berlin MOOP has received a micro grant from the Burning Man organization "Burners Without Borders", now it's all about implementation. We are still in coordination with the responsible offices, updates are happening on a Telegram channel: https://t.me/+X_YsAyB9Pg9iYWUy

4. Burner Embassy Berlin

The topic may have already passed you by: the days of the current Embassy are already counted. There are still 1-2 years (plus Berlin allowance), but the containers will eventually be gone. The desire to stay in the area, however, must be prepared now.

The cooperative Zusammenkunft has set up an application process for the Senate & Co. for this purpose, in which we have already taken the first, still non-binding step. There are a number of discussions about this (in various places), but the key question is:

- How do we finance a space for which more donations (or membership fees) would have to be generated than before?
- What do we do in such a space, and how big should it be?
- And almost the most important question is (since I want to retire in 2 years), who is doing what at the place?

The targeted warm rent should be around €7.50, so just under double of our current (cold) rent. So we can either make the room smaller or improve the cash flow :-)
In addition, there are cooperative shares of 211€ per square meter, so we probably can not (also because the space is in great demand) think about huge spaces. Also with the other associations together the utilization concept must be already convincing (and with an own Orga team from the rows of us and the other associations function).

So if you want to have a burner place in the heart of the city in the future (and we are talking about more than ten years), feel free to throw yourself into the discussions. By the end of the summer, the kid has to be in the clear. Until then, there will also be a series of meetings of the future residents of the House of Statistics to get to know each other, to join forces and, above all, to defend the project against nasty economic and political interests for the center of the city.
Or (and this also has its interesting aspects) the Burner Embassy Berlin will just end in two years. And we will see if and how it reappears somewhere else ... As a "Janitor" who has kept the space open all this time, I personally would prefer the first variant, but I can also live well with the second, if the community wants to go somewhere else. There is also still the possibility that the project to anchor social and cultural in the heart of the city at the HdS will be discontinued - but all parties have promised support in the past and hopefully will remember their words ... Pictures attached!

So far for now!

Hi Burners und Freunde!
(English below)

1. BURN MORE - Burner Konferenz Germany

2. MOOP FUN / Burner Without Border Microgrant

5. Burning Man Art Grants

Hi Burners and friends!

Here is a small update about the current projects of the Berlin Burner e.V.:

1. Burn More - Burner Conference Germany

We are currently preparing a small Germany-centered conference called "BURN MORE" for the end of November in Berlin. Here, different Burn organizers, artists with current projects and other community activists should be able to come together. There is room for about 50 participants. The focus is on the exchange of knowledge and experiences and on the projects for the next year. Location are rooms around the Burner Embassy Berlin in the container village OTTO at the House of Statistics at Alexanderplatz. We are still working on details such as evening events, and are also in the process of recruiting orga people from as many Burns as possible. Our orga can still use support, we are gathering on Discord: https://discord.gg/daFCkc8ZYk.

2. MOOP FUN / Burners Without Border Microgrant

From the Burners Without Borders potluck, the idea has now matured to beautify the city. It involves three MOOP Runs (aka MOOP FUN) in the summer in busy and therefore often filthy parks in Berlin, with art cars, music, costumes and Leave No Trace education, with about 30 volunteers. We have also submitted the project to the Burning Man organization "Burners Without Borders" for funding, but are still waiting for feedback.

3. Burner Embassy Berlin

The Burner Embassy Berlin currently offers a lot of events (except BURN MORE). Always Wednesday evening 8pm-10pm as Open Embassy. With the 2nd Wednesday dedicated to Burners Without Borders as a Community Dinner, and the 4th Wednesday dedicated to the Berlin Burner Pasta Potluck as usual. Karlo is currently offering an open workshop afternoon every Thursday 3pm-8pm with changing topics. Helga now has the Crafternoon back in action on the 1st Saturday of the month 2pm-6pm, and on the 3rd Saturday there is the Burning Man Film Café as part of the HdS KO Market. Also, for our out-of-town Embassy-interested folks, there's Open Burner Embassy Online on the 1st Sunday of the month 7pm-9pm, now via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82486685772?pwd=QU03VGlFbHpsSFZ0WWpGM2E0VUlXQT09

We also want to get together (preferably before BURN MORE) and winterize the Embassy (we've already lost a whole pack of Molton to water intrusion, unfortunately). The Burner Embassy is organizing for this via Telegram: https://t.me/+VRWhBV6RNjXwmFSV. In addition, we will participate in the central locking system with a digital lock, in the future then only email address and a key app need to be used for courtyard and Embassy access. In the meantime, community use of the Burner Embassy is increasing again, which makes things easier.

We are also active in self-governance at the House of Statistics to help determine and shape the Burner Embassy environment. We can still be in the containers for about the next three years. After that we would have to decide whether we then want (and can afford) a permanent space in the renovated house in front on Karl-Marx-Strasse, or whether the Burner Embassy needs a new home. At the moment, it seems to me that both are conceivable, since there will also be a lot of community rooms and spaces for shared use. The way we've been using the courtyard for meetings and pasta potlucks this summer and even last week, community space is actually not bad. Self-management could still use support for our site, that too via Telegram or directly to Helga and me.

4. Art Baer 2023

The very first preparations and coordination with Posa are slowly starting with a view to a new date in early June 2023, but it is still too early for more concrete things.

5. Burning Man Art Grants

Right now the phase for submitting the "Letter Of Intent", the first application step, is underway. I know of individual projects applying and ideas for community projects, but unfortunately nothing more specific yet (and the ratio between applications and actual grants is about 10:1). Such projects will then probably/hopefully present themselves on BURN MORE.

Official Burn, last minute tickets & art & workshops, Tests, Food,

Art Baer - Final Call for everything!

Well, we just got notice that Art Baer is recognized by Burning Man Project as the first official Regional Burn of Germany. Even while being small, we’ll try to show the global Burning Man community that things are good in Germany, and that our community has a lot of potential for more (and also more official events).

If you want to be part of it, you can still join last minute. But you’ll have to make up your mind fast, since money transfers usually take time (or use real time transfer or the more pricey PayPal). We do also recognize low income applications, but there won’t be any cash ticket sale at the gate!
We are also still interested in art works and workshop applications. You can find all necessary information and links on our website http://artbaer.de (switch to English at the top).

When you’re coming, make sure that you obtain an official rapid test result before you leave home (, email is ok, and bring your own daily tests for the week). Sars-CoV-2 BA.5 is everywhere right now (ask Nowhere), and it would be sad for gate crew to send you back all the way home in case of an infection surprise. But if you forgot, there are also some test centers in Zeitz, with only country side opening times …

Also, if you don’t want to eat alone (or share the „burden“ of cooking), get in contact with other participants either on Facebook or our Art Baer Discord server. There is a kitchen and a barbecue on site.

Stay healthy and burnery ;-)

Dusty Hugs
Owl

P.S.: if you want to donate money to our non-profit association Berlin Burner e.V. directed to Art Baer, you can do that here: It helps with the tight budget and to make sure that we can make bigger Art Baers in the following years!

P.P.S.: I’ve already mentioned that some participants did extra donations to bring a sauna and good weather, right?

Neues Sommerevent / new summer event

TL;DR: Save the date:  21.7.2022 bis 24.7.2022

Summer seems a long way off and still without contours. Old familiar things may happen again – but isn’t it time for something new? A long prepared path should finally be walked this summer: from good experiences a new burn for indoors and outdoors is formed. Not country, not castle, but in a (former) monastery, up on the (wine) hill, but still easily accessible (S-Bahn from Leipzig, then a few minutes walk).

„Everybody creates art“ is the focus and will be celebrated.Planned are 150-200 participants, 3 full days (7/21/22-7/24/22), and maybe it will finally become the first official Regional Burn in Germany. With an emphasis on radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, leave no trace, participation, immediacy, and more.

The core of the orga team is coming from Berlin Burner e.V., but there is sooo much to do, not only on site, but long before (experienced Burner:s are knowing this). It will be our Burn all together, and we count on our collective energy.

More details to follow in the new year. Stay alert, creative, enthusiastic and fit (and healthy)!

Neues Werkzeug zur Mitglieder(selbst-)verwaltung / New tool for member (self) administration

Hi Burners,

Hi Burners,

here is our new (internal) portal for the members of the Berlin Burner e.V., and interested guests from the Burner Embassy Berlin and the Burner culture in general.

With this we want to become more dynamic, because hopefully less energy will be wasted in bad structures, and also more visible. Nevertheless, "only" the structures are laid here,

the content and activities still come from everyone. And I hope that in 2021 it can start again soon with many activities!
